Pinguicula moranensis, commonly known as Moran's butterwort, is a captivating carnivorous plant native to Mexico. As part of the Pinguicula genus, it is renowned for its remarkable ability to trap and digest insects using specialized, glandular leaves. The plant features succulent, spoon-shaped leaves, covered with tiny glandular hairs that secrete a sticky, mucilaginous substance designed to capture and digest prey. In addition to its unique foliage, Pinguicula moranensis produces stunning funnel-shaped flowers, typically in shades of purple or pink, with a striking yellow lip.

  • Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch the leaves. If grown in low light, it may become leggy and reduced flowering.

  • Soil

Use a well-draining, acidic soil. A typical mix for carnivorous plants often includes sphagnum moss, perlite, and sand, ensuring good drainage and avoiding minerals that could harm the plant.

  • Water Requirement

Requires pure water, such as distilled or rainwater, as tap water may contain minerals that harm the plant. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

  • Temperature

It thrives in warm temperatures between 21–27°C and it benefits from a cooler dormancy period, with temperatures around 10-15°C.

  • Humidity

Prefers high humidity levels but can adapt to average indoor humidity.

  • Fertilizer

This plant captures and digests small insects like flies, ants, and gnats. If grown indoors, it may require supplemental feeding of insects. If you don’t have insects available, you can feed it tiny amounts of dried insects or specialized carnivorous plant food.

  • Caution

Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy and encourage new growth. After the flowers have bloomed and started to fade, you can trim the flower stalks at their base to prevent energy from being wasted on spent flowers.
