Hydrocotyle vulgaris commonly called pennywort is a low maintenance plant, it prefers to grow in humus, reliably moist soils under a full sun or part shade. Many of the leaves are penny-size, hence where the common name comes. Genus name comes from the Greek words hydro meaning water and cotyle meaning a small cup.

It has rounded, bright green leaves that resemble small, flat coins or shields. Each leaf is attached to the stem by a long, slender petiole, and the leaves are typically 1-3 cm in diameter. The stems are creeping and can spread along the surface of water or moist soil. They root at the nodes, allowing the plant to form dense mats. It grows low to the ground, usually no more than 10 cm (4 inches) tall, but it can spread over a large area in favorable conditions.

Symbolism:

1.      Healing & renewal

2.      Adaptability & resilience

3.      Tranquility & peace

4.      Prosperity & abundance

Pot diameter: 15cm

Plant height: 20-25cm (incl. pot height)

  • Light

Prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun if grown in a water garden or pond.

  • Soil

Prefers rich, loamy soil that retains moisture.

  • Water Requirement

If planted in soil, it needs constantly moist, bog-like conditions to thrive. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil from drying out.

  • Temperature

Ideal growing temperatures are between 18℃ to 27℃. It can tolerate occasional dips in temperature but should be protected from drafts and sudden cold.

  • Humidity

    Enjoys moderate to high humidity.

  • Fertilizer

Does not require much fertilization if grown outdoors in natural ponds or wet environments where it can absorb nutrients from decaying organic matter. In soil, occasional fertilization with liquid plant fertilizers can encourage vigorous growth.

  • Caution

Overwatering in soil-based environments can lead to root rot. Make sure the soil is well-drained, even if it's kept constantly moist.
