Aeschynanthus japhrolepis, commonly known as the Lipstick Plant or Trailing Aeschynanthus, is a popular houseplant admired for its attractive foliage and vibrant flowers. It is particularly well-suited for hanging baskets or as a trailing plant due to its cascading growth habit. The plant features glossy, dark green leaves that are elongated and slightly leathery. The leaves are arranged in pairs along the trailing stems, giving the plant a lush, full appearance. The leaves may have a slight red or purple tinge on the underside, adding to its visual appeal.

The most striking feature of the Lipstick Plant is its tubular, bright red or orange flowers, which emerge from darker buds that resemble a tube of lipstick. The flowers appear in clusters at the ends of the stems and bloom throughout the year, particularly in warm and humid conditions.

Fresh-Cut Flower Care Tips

Here are some simple tips to help keep fresh cut flowers fresh:

  • Keep them away from sunlight or any heat source.
  • Give the stems a diagonal trim and place them in clean, cool water. 
  • Change the water every 2-3 days.
  • Make sure you remove any leaves that are beneath the water line.

Dried/Preserved Flower Care Tips

  • IMPORTANT: Dried flowers DO NOT NEED WATER.
  • Always display dried flowers indoors, to keep them protected from the elements.
  • Keep your dried flowers away from direct sunlight, areas of bright light and away from humidity.
  • Sprinkling water or perfume can cause damage
  • Avoid crushing, pressing or folding flower.
  • If the preserved flower is stained by the dust, you can clean the preserved flower with the blower blowing softly 20cm away from the flower.
  • Temperature changes should be avoided to prevent humidity which could affect your blossoms.

Plant Care Guide for Aeschynanthus Japhrolepsis (Mini Lipstick)《毛萼口红花》

  • Light

    Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon, but too much direct sun can scorch the leaves. In low light, the plant may become leggy, and flowering will be reduced.

  • Soil

    Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.

  • Water Requirement

    Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. The Lipstick Plant prefers evenly moist soil, but it is important to avoid waterlogging.

  • Temperature

    Ideal growing temperatures are between 21℃ to 27℃. Keep it away from air conditioners, cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity

    This plant enjoys high humidity levels, aim for humidity levels around 50% or higher.

  • Fertilizer

    Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.

  • Caution

    Prune the plant regularly to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and spent flowers to keep the plant looking its best. Pruning can also help control its size and promote new growth.
