Calathea lancifolia is commonly known as the Rattlesnake Plant due to its uniquely patterned leaves that resemble the skin of a rattlesnake. The leaves of Calathea lancifolia are long, narrow, and lance-shaped, typically growing up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. The top surface of the leaves is light green with dark green, wavy, oval-shaped markings that run along the midrib, resembling the spots on a rattlesnake. The leaf margins are often wavy, adding texture to the plant’s overall appearance. The underside of the leaves is a rich purple or burgundy, providing a striking contrast to the lighter green upper surface.

Like other Calathea species, Calathea lancifolia exhibits nyctinasty, meaning its leaves move in response to the light cycle. The leaves tend to fold upwards at night, resembling praying hands, and open out during the day to catch the light.

  • Light

Thrives in bright indirect sunlight to partial sunlight. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may experience slower growth and less vibrant leaf colors. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the leaves to scorch and lose their distinctive patterns.

  • Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite or sand to improve aeration.

  • Water Requirement

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plant. Calathea plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water is recommended.

  • Temperature

Ideal growing temperatures are between 18℃ to 27℃. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity

High humidity is essential for Calathea. Aim for a humidity level of 60% or higher. Dry air can cause the leaf edges to brown and curl.

  • Fertilizer

Fertilize lightly during growing season. Fertilise every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.

  • Caution

Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning is generally minimal, as Calathea does not grow very large.
