《孔雀竹芋》
Calathea makoyana, commonly known as the Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows, is renowned for its striking and decorative foliage. The leaves are large, oval, and thin with a translucent quality that allows light to pass through, highlighting the intricate patterns. The top surface of the leaves features a vibrant green background with dark green, feather-like markings resembling a peacock's tail or stained glass. The undersides of the leaves are a deep purple or burgundy, providing a beautiful contrast when the leaves move or curl.
Similar to other Calathea species, Calathea makoyana exhibits nyctinasty, a behavior where the leaves move in response to the light cycle. The leaves tend to fold up at night and open again in the morning, a movement that can be quite fascinating to observe.

Plant Care Guide for Calathea Makoyana《孔雀竹芋》
-
Light
Thrives in bright indirect sunlight to partial sunlight. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may experience slower growth and less vibrant leaf colors. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the leaves to scorch and lose their distinctive patterns.
-
Soil
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite or sand to improve aeration.
-
Water Requirement
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plant. Calathea plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water is recommended.
-
Temperature
Ideal growing temperatures are between 18℃ to 27℃. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
-
Humidity
High humidity is essential for Calathea. Aim for a humidity level of 60% or higher. Dry air can cause the leaf edges to brown and curl.
-
Fertilizer
Fertilize lightly during growing season. Fertilise every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.
-
Caution
Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning is generally minimal, as Calathea does not grow very large.
