Calathea sanderiana is often referred to as Pinstripe Plant or sometimes Goeppertia ornata, as it is closely related to Calathea ornata. It is admired for its elegant, elongated leaves adorned with delicate pink or white pinstripes. The leaves are a deep, glossy green, almost dark enough to appear black in some lighting, providing a dramatic contrast to the fine stripes that run parallel along the length of the leaf. These stripes create a striking, sophisticated pattern that gives the plant its distinct appearance.

Like other Calathea species, Calathea sanderiana exhibits nyctinasty, where the leaves fold up in the evening and open again in the morning in response to light. This movement adds a dynamic element to the plant, making it an interesting addition to indoor plant collections.

  • Light

Thrives in bright indirect sunlight to partial sunlight. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may experience slower growth and less vibrant leaf colors. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the leaves to scorch and lose their distinctive patterns.

  • Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite or sand to improve aeration.

  • Water Requirement

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plant. Calathea plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water is recommended.

  • Temperature

Ideal growing temperatures are between 18℃ to 27℃. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity

High humidity is essential for Calathea. Aim for a humidity level of 60% or higher. Dry air can cause the leaf edges to brown and curl.

  • Fertilizer

Fertilize lightly during growing season. Fertilise every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.

  • Caution

Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning is generally minimal, as Calathea does not grow very large.
